Day 6: mostly playing with elephant poo, wandering the elephant cemetery, weeding the bamboo field and visiting the local market

Was up and raring to go by 7 am, went for a walk round the village and was invited to go and look at an elephant who was a month off giving birth. You could see baby wriggling away, such a privilege! After breakfast (pancakes) we headed off to the poo paper making place.

We were shown the process how to make the paper, then we all had a go. We also helped by making cards for them to sell, using some of paper made previously. We then walked to see the elephants cemetery.

Apparently once an elephant dies, it is buried for between 3 to 5 years depending on the size, then they are dug up and the bones transferred to the cemetery. Next to it was a temple dedicated to elephants under construction. it was an amazing building and we could just wander freely about it.

After lunch we had a bit of free time, so I had a little sleep in a hammock, fantastic til I tried to get out!!! We headed off to our host’s bamboo field to help weed it. The sun was very intense so took it in turns. Understood the idea of many hands make light work!!

We then pottered off to the local market, 5 of us travelled standing in the back of an open van, very cooling. Another quiet night just chatting and drinking beer, in bed for 9.30. On the way to clean our teeth in the back yard with the elephant, Corinne spotted a stag beetle upside down. Being the kind and thoughtful person that she is, she tried to help it using her toothbrush- only problem being that it liked her brush and didnt want to get off!!
