As some of you know, I am now less than a month to turning 60. I am close to completing my 59 things in my 59th year. Today I ticked off one of my favourites, “to eat fish and chips by the sea. ”
Now that sounds simple enough – however it had to be in Filey on the East coast of Yorkshire, a place very close to my heart, having spent many, many years digging sandcastles, scrambling rock pools, eating ice cream and reading the occasional Beano summer special there.
So today was the day for the 240 mile round trip to complete this activity. For the 3rd year running, the town community has created a “Fishtive” Christmas tree on the coble landing, made out of crab and lobster pots.

This was our first port of call. All monies raised are going back to the youth of Filey. Such a simple idea, but so effective.
As the tide was in, we wandered along the front and then up into town, I couldn’t believe the changes of building use, the old banks are now a funeral parlour, a bar and antique shop, the post office, another bar, police station, a coffee shop, estate agent and…yes, another bar! I just hope that there are enough people to fill the bars to make them worthwhile opening.
We headed to another hallowed part of Filey that thankfully has remained ( albeit on a much smaller scale than previously) Sterchis of Filey! Www.sterchis.co.uk
There used to be a wide choice of cakes and treats, ( chocolate boats on a Tuesday, vanilla slices on a Saturday when my grandmother was about) nowadays there are just a few firm favourites available. Cakes duly bought for the family, then stowed safely away in the boot of the car. Yes eating one will be another one ticked off the list.

So on to the main event, fish and chips! Being 3 sleeps to Christmas, I had only expected a couple of chippies to be open, however, they were all open, but were shutting early. We missed our favourite The Brown Room, so headed to Inghams round the corner where we got in 5 minutes before they closed their door.

Maybe we should have sat outside overlooking the sea to be true to the wording of my bucket list, but why be hard on myself? Haddock and chips washed down with a pot of tea and hot water ( obviously in Yorkshire!) Absolute perfection!! I had forgotten how good ‘proper ‘ fish and chips are!
Back down to the front to walk off the food and to see the tree in different light, quite magical.

So I have had my Filey fix for this year, many many thanks to the ever suffering Dave who drove, froze, but never complained once, ( well only a little bit on the inside!! )
